The Ultimate Border Project Fundraiser

To meet the urgent needs of migrant shelters in Tijuana.

Beginning August 2019, LA Throwback began bringing ARIA discs to kids in the migrant shelters of Tijuana, and developing plans to teach Ultimate there, in collaboration with local partners. Right now, though, the shelters need support just to survive. Donations to the shelters from local churches have dried up since the churches cannot hold in-person services. The shelters are privately funded, and URGENTLY need your support. We will send you a custom neckie from Savage in thanks for your direct donation to the shelter of your choice. Here’s how:

Minimum wage in Tijuana is about $10 per day.

Your donations make a huge impact.

The Neckies

Whether you call it neckie, a neck gaiter, buff, or face mask, Savage’s tubular face coverings are perfect for keeping your face covered when it matters. They’ll keep you warm in the winter and protect you from rays in the summer — they’re made from recycled GreenLine fabric which is rated UPF 50+.

These neckies feature either 1) art made by the migrant children at the albergue Embajadores de Jesus, as part of an art project we did there, or 2) our lovely avatar Freddie M. Pelican.

What is the Ultimate Border Project?

The UBP is a multi-organizational collaboration to bring the sport of ultimate to kids in migrant shelters (albergues) along the border, where they and their families wait for their asylum hearings, typically for many months.

We provide discs to the children (thanks to the generosity of our disc sponsor, ARIA discs), and help connect ultimate players with the kids in shelters, teaching them to throw and to play ultimate.

The goal is to bring people together to share the common joy of play and to build community and solidarity. You can learn more about the Ultimate Border Project here.

SHELTERS & SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS

What is the fundraiser for?

The shelters, and organizations that help serve them, have all been hard hit by the pandemic and are in urgent need of financial support to continue to serve the migrant population. The shelters don’t receive government funding. The churches that donate to them can no longer hold services and so can’t collect money to donate, and the length of time migrants have to spend waiting for hearings is getting longer.

Project Partners

We thank our partners for making the Ultimate Border Project possible. Psicologos Sin Fronteras of Baja California (PSFBC) provides counseling and therapy for migrant families and children living in the albergues, and is coordinating training sessions for throwing, conditioning, and drills in the albergues. SOS Migrantes, run by longtime migrant rights activist Hugo Castro, is taking discs to many albergues and helping us coordinate with them. LA Astra is the Los Angeles professional womxns ultimate team. They are generously supporting the project by donating a credit from Savage to pay for the neckie thank you gifts, working with us and Baja Sunset Ultimate to raise the profile of the Ultimate Border Project, and participating with us when the pandemic allows ultimate players from Southern California to go down to Tijuana to participate in the project directly. Baja Sunset Ultimate is the largest youth ultimate frisbee league in Mexico and has extensive programs teaching ultimate to youth. In collaboration with PSFBC, they will be bringing coaches and Tijuana-area players to join in training sessions at the albergues. ARIA Discs generously supports us with their one-for-one disc programs , enabling us to give discs to children in migrant shelters and orphanages.

Support the LA Throwback Foundation

With our Throwback Beach Ultimate Fest, Free Beach Hats, Nighttime Beach Ultimate and other activities suspended indefinitely, we have no revenue sources to support our mission and activities in the near future.

Your donations will sustain us and help us continue our commitment to civic engagement in this difficult time until we can return to beach ultimate frisbee and bringing you high quality beach ultimate events.
